My friend and I were talking in the car about why we click with some people more than others. What I mean by "click" is "connect" or "have chemistry with" or "someone I can be myself with". Who we click with is different from person to person. From my experience the people I click with have the following in common with me:
1) If I don't click upon first meeting someone I won't click with them later either. 2) You either have a sense of humor or can appreciate mine (I have difficulty relating to people who are serious about everything). 3) There is something that you are passionate about, something meaningful that drives you, particularly if it is related with helping people. 4) You question status quo or the way things are done. 5) You're willing to leave your comfort zone and take appropriate risks. 6) You live out what you believe. In other words, you're not all talk. 7) You don't view life through a task-oriented lens, but a people-oriented one.
I watched this movie last week. I don't get the feeling that this is a very Indian movie. The girl in the movie does not look anything like a typical Indian girl. She seems like an Americanized actress. And it's a bit hard for me to believe a guy would be so proactive about finding a girl. I mean, it's not like the girl is her sister or something, but just someone he met randomly. And Jamal getting on "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire" is just way too unrealistic for him to reconnect with the girl. So this movie is hard to believe.
The slum scene bothered me. It reminds me how many people still live in poverty. I wish something can be done to help them.
My friend didn't think that Slumdog Millionaire should have won Best Picture, but then again there weren't that many good movies in 2008. This is probably one of the better ones. My friend didn't think Titanic should have been Best Picture either and I would have to agree with him.
Sometimes the Academy picks great movies for Best Picture like Braveheart or The Lord of the Rings, but sometimes their picks make me wonder why they were thinking.
one of the reasons why gender and language is a big deal is because of the era we live in. women are able to do things now that there weren't able to 50 or 100 years ago.
in the past there was a clear division of labor. the woman took care of the meals and the home and the kids. the men worked and made money.
nowadays, women feel like if they're not some kind of professional then they are not someone important or significant. and this puts unnecessary pressure on women who want to be homemakers.
i mean, let's be honest, have you ever heard of a woman at SFSU say, "i want to be a homemaker?" nope. they would get so laughed at. but the thing is that that is not a bad aspiration if that's what they want to do.
the feminist movement has goods and bads to it. one of the bads is that it has overreacted to the concept of a woman as a homemaker.
and being a homemaker is a important role. though my mom worked she was at home for us kids growing up as much as she could have and boy was i glad for that. if my mom was an absent mom, i would probably have a lot of problems developmentally today. so thank goodness for mothers.
now, on a completely different note. another downside of the feminist movement is that it has emasculated men big time. add the pc movement with the feminist movement and that's why you have guys who are not real men.
when i was a kid, i was taught marked terms like "fireman", "mailman", "policeman". now i don't really care whether you want to change these words to "firefighter" "mail deliverer" and "police officer". that's fine. what i don't like is someone telling me that I have to use these unmarked terms because it's offensive to them if i used the marked ones.
what essentially is happening is someone is telling me how i should speak and what words i should say and that if i don't agree with them then i'm ignorant and live in the 80's or something. when i have to agree with the feminist/pc movement on their words and what they think is right and wrong, as a man i am emasculated. i have no balls or say in how i speak.
this results in making a pansy out of me. i'm a weakling constantly trying to appease the feminist/pc gods. it's like taking the roar out of a lion.
i mean these days i'm suppose to us BCE and CE. A christmas tree is called a holiday tree. and I can't say "merry christmas" but "happy holidays". and if i don't conform to what is "right" then something is wrong with me.
i'm sick and tired of being told what i can or cannot say. i am a man. not a pussycat.
and i don't think the feminist movement plays fair either. i've never heard of a feminist saying, "the word 'manhole' let's change it to 'womanhole' or 'personhole'." why not?
so what i am saying is that if you want to call a fireman a firefighter go for it. if you want to call a policeman a police officer go for it. but go around telling people that they're stupid or unschooled because they use the word "fireman".
just let people say what they want. and don't tell people what they can or cannot say. just let men say what they want. feminist should not expect men to agree with them on using unmarked words. just let the men be men.
Note: I personally believe men and women are equal. I just don't think the feminist/pc movement should be telling people they are less if they don't agree with them. I mean would you stop using "firefighter" and use "fireman" if i told you I was offended by "firefighter"?
2008 wasn’t
a good year for movies. So The Dark Knight is easily the best. The Joker’s
performance is extremely good. There are twists and turns. And there is even a
good story line, which usually lacks in action hero movies. I look forward to
it coming out on DVD on December 9, 2008.
